The Photographed Character: Retouching, Returned Images, and the Completion of the Kigurumi Body
A second production of the character from live performance to platform image
Abstract
Kigurumi creates an actionable character body on site, but most viewers encounter that body through selected, cropped, retouched, and platformed images. This paper integrates photography theory, digital self-presentation, selfie and body research, image forensics, and cosplay studies to define the returned image as a second production of the character. It distinguishes event authenticity, production transparency, character authenticity, relational authorship, and platform authenticity. Retouching is neither automatically deceptive nor automatically harmless; evaluation depends on what the image claims and what its provenance can support.

Research questions
02
Methods and materials
03
Evidence statement
04
Key findings
01Problem
Is the character completed when worn or when the images return?

03Postproduction
How postproduction rewrites the character body
